He watched her sitting opposite him, fidgeting with the mask and drank in the sight of her. The gown became her well, the colour enhanced the violet in her eyes and reddish highlights in her hair. Twisted into a confection on the top of her head, held in place with pins and combs. Therese had provided an amethyst pendant to go with the gown, and it nestled on her white bosom, just above her cleavage. The bodice was fashionably low cut and the silk skirt so skilfully designed that it clung to her shape and made his blood rise just looking at her.
He had been honest with her at dinner, and she had taken it on the chin as she took everything, but his heart wrenched in his chest seeing the tears in her eyes. He had never met a braver or more admirable woman in his life and he most assuredly did not deserve her. Or more to the point, she deserved a much better man than him.
And none of these thoughts did anything to dispel the raging desire he had for her. He had see-sawed back and forth all day on what he would do tonight. Convinced at one moment that he must give her up and at another that he could not. That he must not have her and that he could not deny himself the pleasure he had promised them both. He was still in a hopeless state of indecision on the matter, despite the conversation over dinner. At least he had told her the truth, she had no illusions now about what he could give her.
She turned her head to stare out at the darkened street passing by the window. His eyes snagged on the white column of her neck, the rise and fall of her bosom above the bodice of her gown, the delicate lobe of her ear.
It was too much! He rose and sat down on the seat beside her. She turned, startled, and then she was in his arms and he was kissing her luscious lips, the soft skin of her neck, nibbling that sweet earlobe. Her gloved hands clasped round his neck and her breasts pressed against his chest, their thighs pressed close. Raging heat and desire washed through his body and one arm held her close while his other hand cupped and caressed her breast. Such a joy to have both hands to touch her, hold her, love her with.
âDiana...â he whispered.
âI know...â she whispered back. He closed his eyes and held her tight. She hugged him back, and for the first time he felt something like acceptance, affection, love? Had he ever felt loved? He couldnât remember this feeling. Yet it felt both strange and familiar. As it were something he had waited his whole life for and all but given up hope of experiencing His throat was clogged and his eyes damp. Hell, what was wrong with him? Was he sickening for something?
The carriage began to slow. They were nearing their destination and this interlude must end.
